The Gist: Gilbert Fire and Rescue has welcomed a new arson investigator, and she works on four legs. Xanadu, a yellow Labrador retriever, uses her highly trained nose to detect traces of ignitable liquids at fire scenes, even after heavy damage and water. Trained by the ATF, she has been on the job since October and is already assisting investigators across town.

Why It Matters: Xanadu helps pinpoint whether fires are intentionally set, supporting safer neighborhoods and stronger investigations. She is already active in ongoing cases and is currently the only ATF accelerant-detection dog in Arizona.

The Gist: Gilbert is teaming up with nearby cities for the Regional Unity Walk on January 24, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The evening begins with the Regional UNITY Festival at Tempe Beach Park, featuring entertainment, refreshments, and free T-shirts while supplies last. At 6 p.m., participants will take a one-mile walk across Tempe Town Lake and back. Families, schools, community groups, scout troops, and faith groups are all welcome. No registration required.
