Memorial Day weekend always feels like the official start of summer. The pools reopen, patios start filling up after sunset, and suddenly every calendar is packed.

This week we are especially excited about Sablé Boulangerie, a new French bakery opened by a Gilbert native who trained in Paris before bringing those skills home. Add in community ceremonies, lakeside paint nights, and one last shot at Restaurant Week reservations, and this may be one of our fullest editions yet.

See you around town.

💧 Some summer heat relief

The Gist: The Town is launching its Heat Relief Network from May 26 through September 25 to protect vulnerable neighbors from rising temperatures. Local respite sites like the Williams Field Stake and Redemption Church will offer cool spaces and warm meals Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additionally, the McQueen Activity Center, Southeast Regional Library, and Gilbert Community Center will serve as cooling centers providing air conditioning and free water.

Why It Matters: Many visitors arrive without basic sun-safety essentials like sunscreen, hats, or cooling towels. Neighbors can help by donating urgent supplies through the town's Amazon Wishlist to bring safety and comfort to those who need it most. The network kicks off on May 26 with the Williams Field Stake opening as the first respite site, which will also be the only location open on Saturdays through June 26.

🥐 A taste of Paris comes to downtown Gilbert

The Gist: Gilbert native and pastry chef Will Porter opened Sablé Boulangerie, located right in the heart of the Heritage District at 228 N. Gilbert Road. After training in the South of France and baking at world-class shops in Paris and Dubai, Porter returned home to launch his walk-up French bakery. The scratch-made menu features classic treats like croissants, pain au chocolat, and Parisian-style flan, all crafted with imported French butter and flour. You can grab a pastry and a coffee from Wednesday through Sunday, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Why It Matters: It is always special when local talent brings world-class skills back home to the neighborhood. Sablé gives Gilbert residents a genuine taste of international pastry culture right across the street from our iconic water tower, proving that our community is the perfect launchpad for big dreams.

🍳 The spot where morning effortlessly becomes evening

50 W Vaughn Ave Suite 107, Gilbert, AZ

Maeva transitions smoothly from morning lavender lattes and shatteringly crisp croissants to grown-up European dinners. With its dark walls and checkerboard tile, it has the breezy sophistication of a long weekend getaway.

Arizona Restaurant Week wraps up this Sunday, May 24, and their brilliant $55 three-course menu is worth prioritizing. The play here is the grilled radicchio Caesar, followed by the roasted carnival cauliflower, finished with a decadent date cake. It is the ideal excuse to claim a corner of their parlor before the window closes.

👟 Beat the heat with indoor movement

1141 E Guadalupe Rd, Gilbert, AZ

Escaping the rising temperatures gets much easier at Freestone Recreation Center, especially with a climate controlled indoor walking track and a massive climbing wall right in our neighborhood.

The facility recently upgraded its equipment and features everything from racquetball courts to evening drum fit classes with glow sticks. Starting May 23, select memberships are 20% off for both residents and non-residents, just in time to log miles for the upcoming Shape Up for Summer Fitness Challenge!
