π Shifting park-and-ride out of Heritage DistrictThe Gist: Gilbert is moving its bus park-and-ride facility from downtown to the Cooley Station community near Williams Field and Recker roads. The shift makes room for downtown construction projects, like extending Vaughn Avenue, while setting up a 100-space lot along the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Why It Matters: Moving the transit hub takes commuter traffic pressure off the Heritage District while giving neighbors near Cooley Station easier access to bus routes. The new location also keeps the door open for potential future passenger rail connections between Phoenix and Tucson.
π Big honors for Cactus Yards and Gilbert parksThe Gist: Gilbert Parks and Recreation took home two major honors at the Arizona Parks and Recreation Associationβs (APRA) 76th Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix. George Tole, Recreation Coordinator at Cactus Yards Sports Complex, was named Young Professional of the Year, while the complexβs indoor youth soccer program earned Outstanding Sports Program. Why It Matters: This recognition highlights the incredible work being done right here in our backyard to keep local kids active and included. Beyond standard league play, the program runs inclusive clinics for waitlisted players and a special-needs camp that earned an impressive 88% recommendation rate.
